This year, two Russian documentary filmmakers took the Cannes Film Festival by storm. Sergei Dvotsevoy and Valeria Gai Germanika received prizes for their debut feature length films. The 1st Russian film festival proved its ability to spot vibrant new talent when it screened Gai Germanika’s documentaries ‘Boys’ and ‘Girls’ in 2007, prior to her European success. The Russian film festival 2008 will continue to uphold its high standards by showing the best documentaries made in the last two years. The special documentary programme will include both feature length and short films of famous and emerging Russian filmmakers.

A Melody for German
A documentary film about an outstanding Russian filmmaker Alexei German. An honest and informal narrative told by the filmmaker about his life, his films and things that trouble him.

Rock Monologue
A documentary about the legendary musician Yuri Morozov, who created a subversive, rebellious new style of Eastern rock during the Brezhnev era. The film features previously unseen KG footage, as well as homemade videos of underground rock concerts. It was made under the creative patronage of Otar Iosseliani. Presented by director Vladimir Kozlov.

Drunken Sailor
Shot over 4 years in 5 different countries, the 'Drunken Sailor' follows the infamous British band 'The Tiger Lilies' whilst on tour, revealing their passion for visual and verbal mind games.

Documentary Fiction vs. Fictional Documentary
As part of the programme of documentaries, a round table conference between top Russian and British documentary filmmakers will be held. The conference will promote discussion on the contemporary borders between documentary and feature film.
